Colonel in the Union Army (1842–1864) who was killed while commanding an unsuccessful raid on Richmond, resulting in the ‘Dahlgren Affair’—papers found on his body contained plans to assassinate Jefferson Davis and his cabinet, which stirred up nationwide controversy.
