Chinese ‘Red Band’ Cover

Scarce Chinese ‘red band’ cover sent from Urga Mongolia to Peking China, dated March 8, 1904, and featuring lovely Chinese calligraphy. The cover exhibits Russian postal stamps and chop on cover, as Mongolia was occupied by Russia at the time and had adopted the Russian postal system. On the reverse of the cover, bearing the Russian Arms internal rate 1k orange and 2k green strip of three stamps, tied by the single ring “URGA” violet Russia Post Office chop, with “PEKING / 13.3.04,” Russia Post Office arrival chop present alongside. The sender was likely of Chinese ethnicity, living in Mongolia as evidenced by the use of Chinese characters and calligraphy. A magnificent display of tricultural heritage and philately—tying together Mongolia, Russia and China—on this desirable cover.
