RR Autograph Auctions Charles ‘Chinese’ Gordon

British general (1833-1885) who, in 1860, crushed the Taiping Rebellion in China, earning the nickname ‘Chinese.’ Later appointed Governor General of the Sudan, he traveled to Egypt in 1884 to organize the defense of Khartoum against a rebel uprising and was killed there on January 26, 1885, two days before a relief force arrived. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Gordon, by Adams and Scanlan (1884), signed in the lower border in black ink, “C. W. Gordon.” In fine condition, with a few scattered light surface marks to image and a few stray ink marks. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
