It was an instant bestseller, selling over 1,000,000 copies within the first six months of its publication, and she became so overwhelmed by the countless requests that she received to autograph copies of her novel that less than a year after its publication, she vowed not to sign any more, not even for close friends or relatives. A handsome copy of this 20th-century classic, particularly elusive in uninscribed examples.
