Original copy of the Compass, the annual for George Washington High School, Alexandria, Virginia (Volume 26), for 1961, hardcover, 8 x 10.75, 199 pages, signed in blue ballpoint at the top of the first page, “J. Morrison.” Morrison’s clean-cut image is located in the senior class photos. Remainder of the book bears many signatures and inscriptions to the book’s original owner. In good condition, with moderate to heavy areas of dampstaining and foxing throughout the book, resulting in some pages sticking together and areas of paper loss. However, Morrison’s page is largely unaffected by the exposure, with only mild dampstaining and rippling to page. This was the second high school Morrison attended, having transferred from Alameda High School in California to George Washington, due to his father being stationed in the Navy. Difficult to find even in in unsigned editions, this copy, boasting a very early Morrison signature, is the first signed yearbook we have ever offered. Rare signed book: An American Prayer. Privately published, 1970. Hardcover, 4 x 4.75, 40 pages. Signed and inscribed on the title page in brown felt tip, “For Doug Washington, J. Morrison.” Autographic condition: very fine. Book condition: VG+/None. Maroon heavy cardstock covers with gilt lettering to front; minor wear to edges, with a light bump to front and rear lower edges; minimal soiling to exterior. Morrison took poetry quite seriously, publishing a few small volumes of verse during his lifetime and often improvising poetic passages on stage. Original vintage signed felt tip sketch of a profile of a man’s face and an arrow on the reverse of a vintage original matte-finish 10 x 8 photo of Morrison on stage. Above the sketch Morrison signs, “J. Morrison,” and adds his initials under the sketch. In fine condition, with a few tack holes to edges and some scattered light toning to edges. Aside from being a frontman and poet, Morrison also dabbled in art, primarily in high school. This is the first such example from him we have ever offered. Johnson & Harban Management Account business check, 8.25 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed by Robert L. Greene, payable to James Morrison for $2,000, June 21, 1968. Endorsed on the reverse by Morrison, “J. Morrison,” as well as his girlfriend, Pamela S. Courson. In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, and expected cancellation holes and bank stamps, none affecting the signature. A fantastic, near-pristine check.
